Dan Persa returned to action for the first time in more than a year following an Achilles injury, but limped off early in the fourth quarter of Northwestern's Saturday matchup with Illinois. While scrambling, Persa's right ankle bent awkwardly, leading the announcers to wonder if he aggravated his existing Achilles injury. When the Wildcats came back out for their next offensive series, Persa stayed on the sidlines, walking around somewhat gingerly without a helmet.
With Persa out, Kain Colter is in at quarterback for the Wildcats. As trainers attended to Persa on the sidelines, Illinois came charging back, taking the lead late in the fourth quarter by a 31-28 margin. Colter was unable to engineer a scoring drive, turning the ball over on downs with under three minutes to go.
