Michigan St. Spartans sophomore defensive end William Gholston has been suspended by the Big Ten for this weekend's game against the Wisconsin Badgers after violating the Big Ten Sportslike Conduct Agreement during last week's game against the Michigan Wolverines.
Gholston was flagged for a pair of personal foul penalties during the Spartans' 28-14 loss to the Wolverines, the second of which coming after Gholston punched Michigan left tackle Taylor Lewan in the helmet. According to conference, Gholston violated the Big Ten Conference Agreement 10.01.1.A.1, which includes "striking or attempting to strike or otherwise physically abusing an official, opposing coach, spectator or athlete."
Similar punishment has been handed down by the Big Ten in recent years, including a one-game suspension to former Michigan linebacker Jonas Mouton (a 2011 second-round pick by the San Diego Chargers) for punching an opponent during a non-conference game against Notre Dame in 2009.
"I deeply regret momentarily losing my composure late in the third quarter of last Saturday's game against Michigan," Gholston said in a statement published on the school's official website. "Although provoked, my response was inappropriate. Coach (Mark) Dantonio regularly reminds us that actions have consequences, and I will be better prepared to handle these circumstances in the future. I look forward to my reinstatement."
A starter in all six games for the Spartans, Gholston has 20 tackles the season, including seven tackles for a loss and 1.5 quarterback sacks.
