No. 22 Southern Miss Golden Eagles host the Central Florida Knights, a Conference USA East rival, at M.M. Roberts Stadium on Saturday night.
The Golden Eagles are riding a seven-game winning streak and at 8-1 are off to their best start since the 1996 campaign. Southern Miss is coming off a 48-24 win over East Carolina, scoring 28 first half points on defense and special teams. The Golden Eagles is led by quarterback Austin Davis, who has completed 64.1 percent of 298 pass attempts for 2,147 yards with 18 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Running back Jamal Woodyard has a team-high 475 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.
Central Florida has lost three of their last four games and will be facing a ranked opponent for the first time this season. A young team, 17 of the 37 players to start for the Knights are freshmen or sophomores, a group that includes quarterback Jeffrey Godfrey (sophomore), who has completed 68.5 percent of 203 pass attempts for 1,677 yards with four touchdowns and three interceptions. Godfrey also has 384 rushing yards and a team-high nine touchdowns on the ground.
