Sammy Watkins Injury Update: Sprained AC Joint, Status Uncertain

Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins left Saturday's matchup with Wake Forest after suffering an apparent shoulder injury. At the time, the Tigers trailed by 11, but railed back to come away with a three-point win, 31-28. With the win in hand, the attention turned to Watkins, the speedy multipurpose threat, after the game.

According to ESPN's Heather Dinich, Watkins suffered a sprained AC joint.

Clemson receiver Sammy Watkins sprained the AC joint in his shoulder, and his status is uncertain for next week's game at NC State, according to a school spokesman. I'm told it's not serious, but we'll have to see how Watkins does through the week in preparation for NC State.

Clemson Vs. Wake Forest Final Score: Tigers Headed To ACC Championship Game

The Clemson Tigers were able to escape a near-upset at the hands of the Wake Forest Demon Deacons on Saturday afternoon, as its kicking game came through in the clutch to pull ahead 31-28 on the final scoreboard. There was quite a bit on the line, too, as Clemson was able to clinch a spot in the ACC title game with the victory.

The Tigers actually missed their first potential game-winner when Chandler Catanzaro missed a 30-yard field goal with less than two minutes remaining, but after the Clemson defense was able to force a quick punt from Wake Forest, Catanzaro was able to redeem himself with a 43-yard field goal as time expired.

Wake Forest looked like it was on its way to a sure victory when they opened the third quarter with three consecutive touchdowns to lead 28-14 midway through the third quarter. A pair of touchdown passes from Tajh Boyd knotted the game up at 28 points apiece with five minutes to go, however, allowing a whirlwind final five minutes to ensue.

Sammy Watkins Injury: Clemson Speedster Heads To Locker Room

Clemson is already down to Wake Forest in Week 11, and the Tigers may have to try to make a comeback happen without their most dynamic player. Freshman wide receiver Sammy Watkins has left the game with an injury, and is headed to the locker room, reportedly after having his right shoulder and ribs examined.

Without Watkins, Clemson's chances of a comeback would seem to be fairly slim. He's totaled nearly 200 yards today, between receiving, rushing, and returning kicks, and he's been Clemson's most reliable big-play threat all season.

Watkins has 11 touchdowns in the 2011 season. 10 of those have come on receptions, with another coming on a kickoff return.

Wake Forest Vs. Clemson Score: Tigers With Early Defensive Problems, Tied 7-7 In Second Quarter

A 14-point loss to Georgia Tech last week ended Clemson's darkhorse hopes for an undefeated and potential national championship season. Early on in Saturday's game against Wake Forest, the Tigers still appear hungover from the loss, especially on defense, with the game tied 7-7 early in the second quarter.

It's no secret that Clemson's strengths lay mostly on the offensive side of the ball. Still, the defense has struggled much more than expected against the Demon Deacons. Wake Forest has 138 total yards through a little more than one quarter of play, mixing the run and the pass to positive effect. The Deacons' went 73 yards on 12 plays on their touchdown drive, capped by a 3-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tanner Price.

Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd has struggled mightily early on, starting the game 4-for-8 passing for 67 yards and an interception. A loss on Saturday would be a major blow to the Tigers, who are still in prime position for a BCS bowl if they can win out.
