Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin flatly denied being contacted by Tulane about their head coaching position, according to Tyler Dunne of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Monday evening that Tulane contacted Philbin, whose 27-year coaching career began as a grad assistant for the Green Wave in1984-85. Philbin also earned a master's degree in education from the school in 1986. 

From the Journal-Sentinel:

"All I can tell you is I've got a great job here as the offensive coordinator of the Green Bay Packers," Philbin said. "I would think that thousands of guys would trade places with me. Anything more than that, I really don't have anything to say, other than that there is no substance to it, I've got a great job where I'm at, love what I'm doing and to comment, when you're an assistant coach, I think your job is to help your players reach their full potential. We've got a group of guys that has worked extremely hard and they're doing some good things, and I'm looking forward to seeing this thing through."

Philbin assured he has not been contacted by Tulane.

"I haven't talked to anybody there and again, my comment is, I'm an assistant coach of the Green Bay Packers," he said. "And to speak anything more of my personal future I don't think is appropriate. That's all I have to say."

Philbin has been in Green Bay since 2003 and the offensive coordinator since 2007. Even though Mike McCarthy handles the play-calling, it's not hard to see why Philbin is in high demand. From Packers.com: 

The team's 1,703 points from 2007-10 were the most in franchise history over a four-year span, while the 83 turnovers were the fewest in a four-year period.

The numbers have been even more gaudy this year, as the Packers are leading the NFL with 35.6 points a game. When you're the caretaker of an offense putting up numbers that are historically unprecedented for one of the most storied franchises in the NFL, you're going to get a phone call at some point. And despite Philbin's statements to the contrary, you have to wonder if he might be curious about stepping into the spotlight -- whether it's in the NFL or college ranks -- after 27 years of working in the shadows as an assistant.

If Tulane does come calling, one factor that may come into play is family stability: according to the Packers media guide, Philbin and his wife have six children, including three teenagers and a 10 year old. Uprooting the entire family might not be a popular conversation at the dinner table.
