No. 20 Southern Miss Golden Eagles bring an eight-game winning streak with them to Birmingham on Thursday night, where only the 2-8 UAB Blazers stand between them and the third 10-win season in Southern Miss history.
The Golden Eagles have won eight straight, thwarting a two-point conversion on the game's final play to hang onto a 30-29 win over the Central Florida Knights last week. Southern Miss racked up 519 yards of total offense last week, with quarterback Austin Davis completing 26-of-48 for 364 yards and two touchdowns, including one to freshman wideout Chris Briggs that turned out to be the winning score. For the season, Davis has thrown for 2,511 yards and 20 touchdowns, with receivers Kelvin Bolden and Ryan Balentine combining for 88 receptions, 1,162 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Davis could have another big night, as the Blazers defense is allowing 293.4 yards passing per game, which ranks 116th nationally, and has just seven quarterback sacks, which ranks 120th in the nation. UAB is coming off an incredible, come-from-behind 41-35 win over Memphis, rallying from 18 points down in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Jonathan Perry had four touchdown passes, more than doubling his season total entering the game.
