The No. 8 Virginia Tech Hokies will be looking to extend their winning streak to six games and pick up a 10th win on the 2011 season when they ACC Coastal Division rival North Carolina Tar Heels in Blacksburg on Thursday night. Hokies head coach Frank Beamer is also looking for his 250th win as a head coach, which would put him in sole possession of eighth place among all-time FBS head coaches.
Virginia Tech is coming off last Thursday night's 37-26 win over Georgia Tech, which has them a game up the Virginia Cavaliers in the ACC Coastal Division standings. Virginia Tech and Virginia will meet next Saturday in Charlottesville. The Tar Heels are 2-4 within the conference and 6-4 overall.
The Hokies continue to be led by junior running back David Wilson, who is coming off a career-high 175 yards in the win over the Yellow Jackets. Wilson has 1,360 yards and seven touchdowns, while quarterback Logan Thomas has a team-high eight rushing touchdowns to go along with his 2,143 yards and 14 touchdowns through the air. North Carolina also has a 1,000-yard runner in their backfield, with freshmen Giovani Bernard gaining 1,012 yards with an impressive 11 rushing touchdowns on the season. Quarterback Bryn Renner, whose father played at Virginia Tech, leads the ACC in passing efficiency, but will be looking to bounce back from a 9-of-17 for 76 yards and two interception performance against the North Carolina State on November 5.
