Stay connected with SB Nation

It's been a slow start to the Thursday night ACC matchup between No. 8 Virginia Tech and North Carolina, with the Hokies leading at the half, 10-7. North Carolina is hanging around, and struck first to take a 7-0 lead into the second frame. But the Hokies have answered and are just barely ahead at the break.

Giovani Bernard broke the scoreless tie in the first quarter, plunging in from four yards out to give the Tar Heels a 7-0 lead. The scoring drive spanned just 20 yards in three plays, coming early in the first quarter.

After both sides were unable to get anything going, Virginia Tech finally answered midway through the second quarter, engineering an 18-play, 95-yard drive. Logan Thomas found Chris Drager for 11 yards and the touchdown, knotting the game at seven. The Hokies added a field goal with just under five minutes into the half, and the defense held to ensure a 10-7 score after two quarters.
