After nearly 50 years of dormancy, the Utah Utes and Colorado Buffaloes renew their rivalry on Friday afternoon in Salt Lake City.
The Utah Utes and Colorado Buffaloes, the new additions to the Pac-12 Conference, meet in the "Rumble In The Rockies", a renewal of a rivalry that dates back to 1903. The Buffaloes own a 30-24-3 edge in the all-time series, but Utah won the previous meeting 37-21 in Salt Lake City back in 1962. Utes halfback Bud Scalley was the offensive hero that day for the Utes and his son, Morgan Scalley, is the safeties coach for the current Utah team.
In their first season in Pac-12 play, the Utes are 7-4 and are 4-4 in the Pac-12, picking up three straight wins over Arizona, UCLA and Washington State behind a Kalani Sitake-coached defense that ranks 20th in the nation in scoring defense and is ninth in the country against the run. Senior middle linebacker Chaz Walker leads the Utes with 89 tackles, while sophomore Stud linebacker Trevor Reilly has a team-high nine tackles for loss and five quarterback sacks.
The Buffaloes limp into Rice-Eccles Stadium with a 2-10 record and will be seeking their second win within the Pac-12 after a surprising 48-29 win over Arizona on November 12. Colorado could muster just six points against UCLA last week, which was the third time they've scored single-digit points against a Pac-12 opponent. Running back Rodney Stewart, who missed two games with a knee injury earlier this season, continues to be the main, often only weapon on offense. Stewart has run for a team-high 819 yards with four touchdowns and has a team-high 43 receptions on the season. Quarterback Tyler Hansen and the passing game has gone south since a mid-season injury to Paul Richardson, who has 34 receptions for 510 yards, but just five catches for 36 yards since returning three weeks against USC.
