The Pittsburgh Panthers and the West Virginia Mountaineers kicked off in the annual "Bakyard Brawl" game between the two heated rivals. The Panthers jumped out to an early 14-0 lead thanks to two rushing touchdowns by Panthers running backs, including a 1-yard touchdown run by Zack Brown. The Panthers offense didn't really dominate the 'Eers defense, but they got the ball back enough times to put points on the board.
The Panthers defense however stifled the Mointaineers offense for much of the first half. The 'Eers didn't convert a third down until nearly the second quarter. Outside of a long touchdown pass from quarterback Geno Smith to wide receiver Stedman Bailey, West Virginia couldn't get much going. On Bailey's touchdown catch, it looked like it would simply be just a long gain, but he stiff armed a Pitt defender and made his way to the endzone. The Panthers tacked on a field goal however and lead 17-7 at the half.
