After forcing the Wisconsin Badgers to punt on the opening possession, the Penn State Nittany Lions took a 7-0 lead on their first possession of the game. Wisconsin had been driving, with gains of 14 yards and 11 yards, but neglected to go for the long field goal when faced with a 4th and 10 at the Penn State 35 yard line. The punt went into the endzone for a touchback, and Penn State got started.
Matthew McGloin opened up the drive on the PSU 20 yard line with a 14 yard completion to Justin Brown. Two plays later, following a seven yard rush on second down by Silas Reed, McGloin's third down pass fell incomplete, but James White was called for running into the kicker on the punt and PSU got new life.
Reed and Curtis Drake combined for three short rushes to convert to another first down, and then McGloin blew up the Wisconsin defense with a 44 yard bomb to Curtis Drake, who took it in for a touchdown.
