Over the last two years, South Carolina has begun to establish a little bit more of a toehold in a rivalry that used to be all Clemson. And by the looks of things in the first quarter of the annual tilt this year, the Gamecocks kind of like the feeling.
South Carolina stormed out to a 10-0 in the quarter, limiting Clemson to a single first down and 25 yards of total offense. Meanwhile, quarterback Connor Shaw ran the ball seven times for 64 yards and completed three of his six pass attempts for another 65 yards and a touchdown to Bruce Ellington. That score, which came on a 49-yard strike, was an encouraging sign for an offense that has seen few big plays since star running back Marcus Lattimore was sidelined against Mississippi State.
