Alabama Crimson Tide offensive coordinator Jim McElwain was reportedly interested in the Memphis Tigers job before taking his name out of the running at the last minute. Now, McElwain has removed himself from Fresno St. Bulldogs contention, according to Tidesports, after interviewing Friday for the job.
According to the Sacramento Bee, that leaves Oakland Raiders assistant Kelly Skipper as the primary candidate, who was also reportedly interviewed heading into the weekend.
McElwain reportedly turned down the job with his former employer over concerns about Fresno State's athletics budget, which likely would've been a concern at Memphis as well. He'll return to coach for one of the richest programs in the land. How much of Fresno State's financial decline can be attributed to waning support in the latter Pat Hill years is hard to say.
Before coaching at Alabama, McElwain was Hill's offensive coordinator in 2007. He's also coached with the Radiers, as is the thing to do.
