Southern Miss needs a coach to replace Larry Fedora, who has changed hats.
Finally, Southern Miss coaching candidates! Since Larry Fedora left for the North Carolina Tar Heels, word out of Golden Eagles camp has been kept to a minimum. But then, Thursday morning, a flood of reported USM prospects came through:

Alabama Crimson Tide defensive coordinator Kirby Smart, one of the three or four most-coveted assistants in the country, interviewing with Southern Miss of Conference USA? Since Auburn Tigers offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn took over at Arkansas State, anything's possible. Southern Miss just won a conference superior to ASU's Sun Belt, you'll also note.
Oklahoma St. Cowboys assistant Todd Monken is another big name. His 2011 Pokes offense, you'll recall, nearly edged out Smart's defense for the chance to play LSU in the national championship game.
