The Kansas Jayhawks hired Charlie Weis earlier this year and the former NFL head coach is doing his best to add a top-flight quarterback. Weis is already known to be courting Dayne Crist and now former BYU Cougars quarterback is also set for a visit.
Heaps played two seasons for the Cougars, but announced his intentions to transfer earlier this month after not being able to establish himself in the starting role in Bronco Mendenhall's offense. At the time of his transfer, Heaps mentioned that he was hoping for a fresh start.
That fresh start could come with the Jayhawks. Heaps will have to sit out the 2012 season under transfer guidelines, but Rivals site JayhawkSlant.com (via College Football Talk) is reporting that the former top quarterback prospect is visiting Kansas soon. The site also breaks down the possibility of Weis being able to land both top quarterbacks, if they're interested.
There's actually the possibility Weis could land both Crist and Heaps with no fear of overlap. The former has already graduated and would be permitted to use his final season of collegiate eligibility immediately in 2012, while the latter would have to sit out the 2012 season to satisfy NCAA transfer rules and wouldn't be eligible to play until 2013. Heaps would, however, be permitted to practice with team next season and learn Weis' offense.
The Jayhawks would make quite a statement this year if they were able to land Weis, Crist and Heaps as they look to turn the football program around.
