The UAB Blazers are already deep into their search for a new coach, according to the Birmingham News' Steve Irvine, after letting go of Neil Callaway earlier in the week. Irvine reports a list approximately five names long:
Auburn assistant coach Curtis Luper, Arkansas offensive coordinator Garrick McGee, former Illinois offensive coordinator Paul Petrino and former Buffalo and Kansas head coach Turner Gill ... Houston offensive coordinator Jason Phillips could also be in the mix.
All but Phillips are believed to have interviewed for the position by Friday.
Petrino was the Illinois Fighting Illini offensive coordinator until the recent firing of Ron Zook. Yep, he's Bobby Petrino's younger brother. Atlanta Falcons receiver Roddy White, a former UAB star, has credited Petrino with helping to turn his career around. And you thought we couldn't find a Petrino-UAB connection.
Gill is the former Kansas Jayhawks coach who appeared to be well over his head at the BCS level, but who'd previously turned the lowly Buffalo Bulls into MAC champions. If you can win anything at any point with Buffalo, you can ... well, maybe you can win at UAB.
