The 2011 New Mexico Bowl will pit the Temple Owls against the Wyoming Cowboys in Albuquerque, giving the game a Mountain West Conference vs. Mid-American Conference pairing. The Owls went 8-4 this season, emerging in the public eye early on with a near-upset over the Penn State Nittany Lions. The Cowboys also went 8-4, dropping games against Utah State, Nebraska, TCU and Boise State.
The sixth Gildan New Mexico Bowl will kick off the 2011-12 bowl season on Saturday, December 17. Clay Matvick, Brian Griese & Jessica Mendoza will be working the ESPN broadcast and will have their work cut out for them if they want to keep your interest the entire time.
Traditionally, the game pits a Mountain West Conference team against one from the WAC. However, the Pac-12 now has a tie-in to the bowl game to take on a MAC team. New Mexico and Fresno State have both played in the game twice while six other schools have appeared once. Last year, the BYU Cougars defeated the UTEP Miners 52-24.
It's the first year that Gildan is the bowl sponsor. Gildan is an apparel company whose HQ is located in Montreal, Canada, so your guess is as good as mine as to how they ended up here.
Game date, time: 2:00 pm ET, Saturday, December 17
Location: University Stadium, Albuquerque, New Mexico
TV channel: ESPN
2010 winner and loser: BYU 52 - UTEP 24
