College Football Rankings Preview: Oklahoma State, Alabama Battling For Votes

We know LSU is No. 1, but will Oklahoma State be able to close the gap in the human polls to catch Alabama in the BCS rankings?

And with that, the college football regular season is over. It's a sad day, in some ways, but exciting in others. Where once we thought a rematch in the BCS Championship was inevitable, now we're not so sure. It all comes down to this week's college football rankings, which will be released throughout the day on Sunday.

To be clear, the top-two probably won't change in the human polls. But it doesn't matter whether the rankings change; the number behind the rankings will be key on Sunday. Yes, LSU will be the unquestioned No. 1, but if Oklahoma is able to steal a few votes and close part of the gap to Alabama, things could get interesting when the BCS rankings are released.

How the Harris and Coaches Polls shake out, all the way down to single votes, will be crucial on Sunday when deciding whether Alabama or Oklahoma State will get a shot at LSU. And we'll start to get a better idea of what could happen when the BCS rankings are released in the evening as the poll results are made public on Sunday morning.

Here's a look at the games that mattered this week.

No. 1 LSU 42, No. 14 Georgia 10. At least there's no debate about this one. The Honey Badger still does amazing things and LSU is still the easy No. 1 team in the country.

No. 3 Oklahoma State 44, No. 10 Oklahoma 10. The Cowboys did exactly what they needed to do on Saturday evening. A convincing win, perhaps one that would sway a couple voters, was the order of the day, and Oklahoma State did just that. Now everything gets a lot more interesting.

No. 20 Clemson 38, No. 5 Virginia Tech 10. Many wondered whether the Hokies were for real heading into the ACC Championship and Clemson hit the gas to leave Virginia Tech in the dust in the second half. The big loss could reverberate in the rankings on Sunday.

No. 24 Southern Miss 49, No. 6 Houston 28. This one stings, both for the Cougars and Conference USA. A massive pay day was on the way to Houston and its conference, and all the Cougars had to do was win. Instead, Southern Miss put on a show, knocking out the Cougars in convincing fashion. So much for that idea.

No. 7 Boise State 45, New Mexico State 0. Another easy win and another big performance from Kellen Moore. Unfortunately, Boise State appears to be on the outside looking in.

No. 9 Oregon 49, UCLA 31. Oregon's headed to the Rose Bowl, but UCLA did put up somewhat of a fight in Rick Neuheisel's last game. The Ducks' ranking will be irrelevant, but not a bad way to cap the Pac-12 season for them.

No. 11 Kansas State 30, Iowa State 23. Kansas State probably moves up and the Wildcats could be BCS bowl bound as a result.

No. 15 Wisconsin 42, No. 13 Michigan State 39. Still wondering what might have been for Wisconsin. If nothing else, the Badgers are headed to the Rose Bowl after one heck of a Big Ten Championship game, featuring plenty of Gus Johnson.

No. 17 Baylor 48, No. 22 Texas 24. Robert Griffin III is just incredibly fun to watch. That's all I got here, but it's all that matters.

No. 18 TCU 56, UNLV 9. TCU needed this game, but it still might not matter. The Horned Frogs need to move into the top-16 to get a BCS bid, but even a convincing win over UNLV may not matter.

No. 23 West Virginia 30, South Florida 27. And this one mattered for the BCS rankings, which will serve as the tiebreaker for the three-way Big East tie. No other Big East team was ranked headed into the week, and West Virginia should secure the bid.

Here's a look at last week's BCS rankings. The BCS preview will be along shortly and the final rankings will be released Sunday night.
