Michigan Vs. Virginia Tech Final Score, Sugar Bowl 2012: Wolverines Take Thriller

For the fifth time in school history, the Michigan Wolverines have won 11 games in a season. Brendan Gibbons was good on his third of three field goal attempts of the 2012 Sugar Bowl, making it 23-20 in favor of Michigan after third-string Virginia Tech Hokies kicker failed for the first time in his five attempts. Life's like that. Live Sugar Bowl box score and Sugar Bowl FAQ.

Michigan's offense was all but shut down for the entire evening, gaining only 184 yards in five periods. Virginia Tech held Denard Robinson to 130 total yards -- Danny Coale caught 117 even with a touchdown called back -- but gave up three turnovers and had to settle for field goals all night long.

The question coming into this game was whether the Hokies even deserved to be in New Orleans. They certainly proved they can compete with anybody, but missed again in their efforts to add a noteworthy victory to their 2011 campaign.

ANIMATED: Danny Coale Touchdown Catch Called Back In Sugar Bowl Overtime

Hey, was this a catch or not? Some people have opinions about whether this was a catch or not, so maybe you do too. Virginia Tech Hokies wide receiver Danny Coale, who's been terrific when not punting throughout the 2012 Sugar Bowl, laid out in the end zone for a heave from quarterback Logan Thomas, landing with the ball -- which appeared to maybe budge a little, from a certain angle, once you squinted: Live Sugar Bowl box score and Sugar Bowl FAQ.

It ended up being called back by the game's Pac-12 officials, which was a very, very big deal, as Justin Myer missed the first of his five field goal attempts on the next play. If the Michigan Wolverines are able to achieve only a single field goal, that'll decide this game.

(Looks like a catch to me.)

Michigan takes on Virginia Tech in 2012 Sugar Bowl

There's plenty of argument to be made that the Michigan Wolverines and Virginia Tech Hokies did not deserve an invitation to the 2012 Sugar Bowl over a number of teams with better rankings, but they're still likely to produce an entertaining contest on Tuesday night. Virginia Tech has only lost to one team this season, the Clemson Tigers, while the Wolverines have enjoyed a serious resurgence under Brady Hoke and have made serious improvements on the defensive side of the ball.

Michigan's improved defense and VT's always stellar special teams play will be keys to the game, but the most talked-about aspect of the game will still be the play of Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson, who is considering early entry into the NFL Draft. Robinson, who was previously thought of as an injury-prone player, played in every game for the Wolverines this season while accumulating over 2000 yards passing and 1000 yards rushing.

The Hokies have some offensive firepower of their own, and will be leaning heavily on running back David Wilson, the ACC Offensive Player of the Year.

Game date, time: 8:30 p.m. ET, Tuesday, January 3

Location: Mercedes-Benz Superdome, New Orleans, Louisiana

TV channel: ESPN

Odds: Michigan favored by 1 point

Sugar Bowl 2012: Michigan Unveils Special Road Uniform

On Tuesday the Michigan Wolverines unveiled a new white road uniform they'll wear Jan. 3 against the Virginia Tech Hokies during the 2012 Sugar Bowl. It's the third time this year they'll wear a special jersey, following their retro-inspired "Legacy" threads from their home game against Notre Dame and their road game against Michigan State.

Michigan Football's photo Rumors are true, U-M football will don a new white road jersey in the 2012 Sugar Bowl vs. Virginia Tech. Here it is

Michigan's head coach Brady Hoke explained the decision to wear the special uniform in a statement released by the school:

"We met with our seniors and showed them some concepts that were proposed by adidas and the mock-up is what they chose," said head coach Brady Hoke. "This is a something the players enjoy and we thought it would be a nice way to commemorate our appearance in the Sugar Bowl."

In addition to the jersey -- which features a blue collar, blue stripes on the shoulder pads, a block M on the upper right chest and the Sugar Bowl logo on the upper left chest -- the Wolverines will also wear gray face masks, a tribute to the school's helmets from the 1960s.

Player numbers on the helmets, which debuted during the Notre Dame game and became a permanent addition this season at the players' request, will also be worn.

Virginia Tech announced on Twitter they'll wear their regular maroon helmets and maroon jerseys.
