BYU quarterback Jake Heaps wil transfer, the school has announced.

BYU Cougars sophomore quarterback Jake Heaps will transfer from Provo, the school announced Monday. It's not yet clear where he'll wind up, and he won't play with the team in the Armed Forces Bowl.

He finished the year with 1,452 yards -- ranking No. 82 in the country -- plus nine touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Heaps and junior Riley Nelson split time throughout the season, with Nelson emerging as the preferred starter late in the year. An injury to Nelson gave Heaps the role late in the year, but Nelson piloted the Cougars in their finale against the Hawaii Warriors.

His exit leaves the Cougars with Nelson, Carter MeesAlex Kuresa, and James Lark on the roster for next year. Lark, another junior, looks to be Nelson's backup for the time being, having hurled six attempts in 2011.
