Randy Shannon Not Going To Arkansas, According To Report

Multiple Arkansas outlets have reported former Miami Hurricanes head coach Randy Shannon is likely to be the next Arkansas Razorbacks defensive coordinator. The Razorbacks let go of defensive coordinator Willy Robinson earlier in the week, part of a dramatic coordinator adjustment that's included Paul Petrino signing on.

According to Tim Reynolds, the Associated Press' Miami man, Shannon's not happening:

Tim Reynolds@ByTimReynolds For all asking, no, Randy Shannon is not going to Arkansas. At least that's what he's told his close confidantes.

For a while, Shannon's name came attached to every head coach job opening. He's made it clear he wants to be a head coach again. Though his expertise is on the defensive side of the ball, which surely makes him intriguing to many a program looking to upgrade its stopping power, it's not hard to imagine he'll keep holding out for a top job.

Garrick McGee Hired As UAB Football Coach, Bobby Petrino Confirms

Arkansas Razorbacks offensive coordinator Garrick McGee has been hired as the new head coach of the UAB Blazers, Hogs boss Bobby Petrino confirmed in a statement. McGee had been one of a cluster of coaches who'd reportedly interviewed for the gig, which became available upon the resignation of Neil Callaway.

From Petrino:

I want to congratulate Garrick McGee on becoming the head football coach at UA. I have enjoyed watching Garrick progress throughout his career and I am excited to see him get this opportunity. Garrick has been with me as a player and an assistant coach and I thank him for being a big part of everything we have been able to build here at Arkansas. The guidance he has provided our offense and quarterbacks the past four seasons has been immeasurable. Garrick grew up the son of a coach and is a natural teacher and leader. He will have a solid plan for the football program at UAB and the dedication to carry it out. Garrick, Tiffany and the entire McGee family leave with my gratitude for a job well done with the Razorbacks, and best wishes for continued success at UAB.

McGee was named Arkansas' OC before the 2010 season. He'd been linked with the once-available Tulsa job -- he's from Oklahoma -- but withdrew his name. He's coached at Northwestern, Toledo, and elsewhere.

Ron Zook Fired As Illinois Head Coach, According To Reports

Illinois head coach Ron Zook has been fired, according to a report from the Champaign News-Gazette's Bob Asmussen. Asmussen cites a source in his report, and says that official word on Zook's firing is forthcoming. Sources also tell CBS Sports that a press conference has been called for 4 p.m. Central to announce the firing.

Zook being let go comes as no surprise now, given the roller-coaster ride that has been Illinois football in the last 12 months. Zook was rumored to be on his way out at the end of 2010, after his Illini posted a 6-6 record, but was brought back for the 2011 season and had Illinois at 6-0 after its first six games of the season.

Then the Illini lost six straight games, becoming the first team in college football history to start 6-0 and finish 6-6, a collapse that likely sealed Zook's fate.

Zook is 34-50 in seven seasons at Illinois, peaking with a trip to the Rose Bowl in 2007 and recording just one other season above .500.
