Fred Thompson Dies: Oregon State Community Reacts To Tragedy

Oregon St. Beavers defensive tackle Fred Thompson died after suffering a heart attack Wednesday night. He was playing basketball at the campus' Dixon Recreational Center when he collapsed on the court, and was declared dead at 7 p.m. PT. He was only days shy of his 20th birthday.

The powerful freshman, who redshirted this year after withstanding a shoulder injury in training camp, hailed from Richmond, California. When he signed with the Beavers, he said, "I can’t remember the last time I cried. The last time I cried was probably at my dad’s funeral."

Oregon State fans at Building the Dam either faced the news late Wednesday or are waking up to it Thursday morning. They're understandably shaken, as are cross-state Oregon Ducks fans at Addicted to Quack.

Entirely too many player deaths in college football over the past year and a half.
