The Central Florida Knights have hired former Auburn Tigers defensive coordinator Ted Roof, UCF announced Thursday morning. Roof wasn't fired by Auburn, per se, but was able to manage a soft landing immediately after departing from a far superior job. Well-handled by Auburn.
UCF coach George O'Leary worked with Roof on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets staff at the turn of the century. Roof on the move:
"It's a wonderful opportunity to come to a great place. It's just as important to come work for a coach who I have tremendous respect for," said Roof. "He gave me my first break as a coordinator in football, and I think it says a lot about how I feel about coach (O'Leary)."
Auburn ranked No. 78 in defense this year, No. 60 with Nick Fairley around, and No. 68 in 2009. He'll take over a unit that's finished in the top 15 two years in a row.
