With former Miami Hurricanes coach Randy Shannon reportedly telling confidants he won't be taking the Arkansas Razorbacks defensive coordinator position, it's time to round up some more candidates. Why hello there, Tyrone Nix, late of the Mississippi Rebels, a coach whose name one wouldn't believe had it not passed from the fingers of Bruce Feldman:
@BFeldmanCBS Hearing Tyrone Nix is a leading candidate for the Arkansas DC vacancy.
Nix came aboard Houston Nutt's program in 2008, when Nutt took over the Rebels after leaving ... hey, Arkansas! Nix soon leveled up, adding an assistant head coach pin to his badge. He's previously coached at South Carolina and Southern Miss, having played his college ball for the Golden Eagles as well. He's from Alabama.
Since new Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze hasn't constructed a staff yet, technically Nix is still the Rebels defensive coordinator. It would inspire many, many, many a chuckle around Oxford if the Hogs were to import from the Grove after so heartily enjoying Nutt's post-Arkansas struggles.
Ole Miss finished the last two seasons ranked in the 80s defensively, but landed in the top 25 in Nix's first two years.
