USC NCAA Investigation Follies: Social Media Edition!

It's been an active day in the sphere of the NCAA's neverending dalliance with USC and Lane Kiffin: Former Trojans commit DeAnthony Thomas, who decamped at the eleventh hour to sign with Oregon, posted on Twitter last night that he'd been questioned by NCAA investigators. Message board communities erupted in panic and braggadocio, assuming this was the much-ballyhooed hammer about to fall on a major program.

Only then ... Thomas clarified in his Twitter feed that the NCAA was questioning him about USC, not Oregon.

And CBS's Los Angeles man on the scene, Bryan Fischer, reports that Thomas' coach seems not to know anything about any of this. (And just to make things interesting, Thomas' account could still be that of an impostor, for all we know.) To top it all off, Tennessee insider Clay Travis reports that "USC wants Lane Kiffin to admit to NCAA violations rather than appear at hearing in June," and Kiffin appears to have deleted a tweet wishing a happy birthday to Reggie Bush.

So much gossip to choose from, all of it more than likely entirely insignificant. Viva offseason, everybody. If you need us, we'll be hibernating until August.

[UPDATE: And now, reached by phone, Thomas claims the Twitter account isn't even his. So either he's being shushed by higher-ups, or someone has created a fake Twitter account for an 18-year-old recruit. Oh, college football. You give and you give.]
