Some great news out of Northern Illinois this afternoon: NIU junior linebacker Devon Butler, shot in the back last week in an apparent drive-by, has been upgraded to stable condition. Initially listed as a critical patient, he was first upgraded to serious condition on Tuesday, and has apparently recovered enough to post on Facebook or have somebody do it for him:
A post from him late Monday morning said, "Thanx for all the luv! I’m doing fine and will b[e] up [and] running [i]n no time! Just keep praying for me. Sckoop."
Butler was injured when guns were fired from a car at a friend's apartment, in what police are characterizing as a drug-related dispute. (Please note: They've also emphasized they have no reason to suspect Butler was involved in any illegal activities himself.) Two students have been charged in the incident with, among other offenses, attempted first-degree murder.
A native of south Florida, Butler started the majority of last season for the Huskies at middle linebacker. No timetable has been speculated for his return. For more on his recovery and for all your Huskies athletics news needs, visit SB Nation's Red And Black Attack.
