Russell Wilson To Wisconsin: University Confirms With Bret Bielema Statement

Like a surprise handoff that won't be a surprise to anyone in Madison, to Russell Wilson's alleged July 1 football-or-baseball-or-football decision arrived early, and his intentions to transfer to the University of Wisconsin have just been confirmed in a statement by the school. From the UWBadgers.com release:

"Russell will come in and compete for the starting quarterback position," Bielema said. "This is an unusual situation, especially for a program that prides itself on developing players throughout their careers, as we do here at Wisconsin. However, this is a special situation and Russell is the type of player and person that fits very well with our team."

Wilson will succeed Scott Tolzien at the helm of an offense ranked 21st nationally in total yardage in 2010, and fifth in scoring, and a good bet for the Badgers to reach the first-ever Big Ten title game this winter just got better. SB Nation's Wisconsin blog is stoked for the opportunity to lead the Leaders division (sorry):

Needless to say, this is a huge get for Wisconsin. Boasting a talented running game and an improved defense, the only glaring hole in Wisconsin's quest to return to the Rose Bowl was the lack of a reliable quarterback. Not only is Wilson reliable, but he is arguably one of the most talented quarterbacks to ever potentially take a snap for the Badgers.

And our N.C. State community, to their everlasting credit, continues to wish the kid well: "Good luck in Wisconsin, Russell. This is going to be really weird. Never let it be said that you don't like a challenge."

The newly be-Wilsoned Badgers will open the 2011 season on Thursday night, September 1, at home against UNLV.

Conflicting Reports On Russell Wilson Transferring To Wisconsin

Former N.C. State quarterback Russell Wilson might be the next Cam Newton -- in that he's taking over as likely starting quarterback at a school ranked No. 15-25 after an interesting journey capped off by a transfer. But he will not be the next Cam Newton by taking over at Auburn, because Wilson is reportedly headed to Wisconsin to play for the Badgers, according to Keith Arnold.

And in that sense, Wilson might actually be headed for a slightly better situation than Newton encountered when he landed in Opelika. With the many, many problems at Ohio State, Wisconsin likely enters the season as one of the favorites in the Leaders Division. (That's the one with the Buckeyes, Badgers, Penn State, Illinois, Purdue and Indiana.) Wilson can only help solidify that standing. Once everyone remembers what the Leaders Division is.

Or not, according to Matt Lincoln of NBC 12 in Richmond.

Just spoke to Russell Wilson's mother - he says Wilson HAS NOT told Wisconsin that he is going there yet. #Wisconsin #Badgers #NCStateless than a minute ago via web Favorite Retweet Reply

Let's guess that Lincoln meant to say that she says Wilson has not told Wisconsin he -- meaning Wilson -- is playing for the Badgers. In any case, there's still some wiggle room in the construction there; Wilson could have made a decision and not told Wisconsin. But that seems to be a pretty tight denial.

Stay tuned.
