Danny Wuerffel Recovering, Undergoing Rehab For Guillain-Barre Syndrome

Former Florida quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel continues his recovery from Guillain-Barre Syndrome and has started rehab. Wuerffel released a statement on his website on Tuesday to assure his fans that things are going well:

As I move into the second month of my battle with Guillain Barre, I’m finally starting to feel more like a person and less like a patient. And I’m getting stronger.

Wuerffel is undergoing rehab for the effects of muscle loss associated with the condition. As we have seen previously, Wuerffel continues to be upbeat during this trying time and has kept a sense of humor:

(for all you folks who think now is the time to finally beat me at something, you better hurry up cause I’m coming back strong, baby! :)

Wuerffel also provides some sage advice about waiting. He can't rush his recovery, but waiting for it will build strength in him to endure it.

Danny Wuerffel On Guillain-Barre: 'I Seem To Get Just A Little Bit Better Each Day'

Former Florida great Danny Wuerffel, who has been diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome, has now released a message to supporters and well-wishers on the website of Desire Street Ministries, which he founded.

I seem to get just a little bit better each day, and feel confident that the worst is behind me. …

All signs are pointing towards a good recovery. There is a chance my reflexes and coordination may not fully recover. Please pray that isn’t the case.

In addition to the update on his medical condition, Wuerffel’s message shows he’s keeping his sense of humor in tact and trusting God.

Why couldn’t the doctors that discovered this syndrome have been named Smith/Davis or something? …

Pray I will use this time wisely. Pray I will hear God’s voice clearly and that this will be what author Richard Rohr calls “Liminal” time, or time at the threshold where God puts us in a strange situation (usually challenging ones where we aren’t in control) where we are most apt to listen and grow.

Wuerffel intends to keep his fans updated on a weekly basis.

Danny Wuerffel Ministry Confirms Diagnosis Of Guillain-Barre Syndrome

Danny Wuerffel's ministry has issued a statement confirming his diagnosis of and treatment for Guillain-Barre Syndrome. Details are sparse in the release, as you might expect in a situation like this, but it's generally upbeat. Luder Whitlock, chairman of the Desire Street Ministry board:

Fortunately, an early diagnosis identified the disease, permitting swift medical treatment. Consequently, his GBS specialist expects a full recovery. Meanwhile, Danny has asked me to express his appreciation for the prayers, love and support he has received during this time.

Wuerffel is asking that cards or gifts instead be sent to Desire Street. Meanwhile, the organization says it will let fans and supporters know what's going on with Wuerffel at www.desirestreet.org and at the organization's Facebook page at www.facebook.com/desirestreet.

All of which amplifies the new profile of sports stars and celebrities dealing with illnesses like this in the Internet era. It can complicate and speed the flow of the news -- from the unfortunate news of the illness to the hopefully better results of treatment.

Danny Wuerrfel Receiving Treatment For Guillain-Barre Syndrome, According To Report

Former Florida Gators quarterback Danny Wuerffel has entered a Birmingham Ala., hospital for treatment of Guillain-Barre syndrome, reports the Gainesville Sun. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, Guillain-Barre Syndrome "is a serious disorder that occurs when the body's defense (immune) system mistakenly attacks part of the nervous system. This leads to nerve inflammation that causes muscle weakness."

The NCBI reports that most people do recover fully from this, but that it could take months or even years. While not many details have emerged from this yet, there are reports that he contracted a "stomach bug" while on a retreat in Colorado, which may have precipitated the onset of GBS.

Wuerffel played for the Florida Gators from 1993-96 and capped his career in his senior year with the 1996 Heisman Trophy. He passed for 3.625 yards and threw 39 touchdown passes.
