The 2011 college football season is nearly upon us, but the season for preseason watch lists is already in full swing. Today is all about the kickers and punters as the Ray Guy and Lou Groza Award watch lists have been released.
The Ray Guy Award – named for football’s premier punter – honors the nation’s best collegiate punter. The list only contains five players and all of them have been here before. Cal's Bryan Anger, Georgia's Drew Butler, Rice's Kyle Martens, Oklahoma State's Quinn Sharp and Clemson's Dawson Zimmerman are the five punters you'll be keeping your eye on all season...assuming keeping a close eye on punters is your thing. A complete list of candidates will be released on Oct. 28.
The Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award is named for NFL Hall of Fame kicker Lou "The Toe" Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. There's a few more names on this one, thirty to be exact. It's headlined by Michigan State junior Dan Conroy, Duke senior Will Synderwine and Syracuse sophomore Ross Krautman. 20 semi-finalists will be announced on October 28.
