Early reports of Arizona State linebacker Vontaze Burfict sucker punching teammate Kevin Ozier appear to have been exaggerated. According to SB Nation Arizona's sources, the alleged assault in the locker room never happened as reported. Doug Haller of AZCentral.com also reported that the initial story by SportsByBrooks was wrong in many details.
According to these sources, there was an altercation between the two in the Sun Devils' locker room. Each player got a punch off, Burfict first, before the altercation was broken up. That is far from the first report of a blindside sucker punch.
As for Burfict's absence during Saturday's media day, Haller reports that Burfict chose not to attend. Burfict has talked little with the media since he arrived on campus, so this wasn't out of the ordinary. Haller also notes that an Arizona State spokesman has indicated that large portions of the original report are fabricated.
