The NCAA handed down penalties to the Boise State Broncos on Tuesday and the football team took a glancing blow. The Broncos will lose scholarships and practice time for the next three years as part of a lack of institutional control penalty handed down by the NCAA Committee on Infractions, in addition to a three-year probationary period. The investigation spanned multiple Boise State sports, with women's tennis and track suffering much harsher penalties.
First, the football side. Here's the list of sanctions the Broncos were hit with.
1) Three years of probation from September 13, 2011 through September 12, 2014
2) Scholarship reduction from 85 to 82 for the 2011-2012, 2012-13, 2013-2014 academic years. (The football program already self-imposed the reduction for 2011-2012 school year)
3) The football team must reduce the preseason practice opportunities by 3 for the 2011 and 2012 seasons. Additionally, they will be limited to three less spring contact practices in 2012, 2013, and 2014.
The women's tennis team was hit with a one-year postseason ban and the coach who presided over the program at the time was handed a four-year show-cause penalty. On the track side, a former assistant coach was given a two-year show-cause penalty.
The penalties are the result of a broad-reaching investigation that found violations involving 75 student-athlete prospects over a five-year period. A list of the allegations can be found here.
