LSU Vs. Mississippi State Final Score: Tigers Demolish Division Foe, 19-6

Stay connected with SB Nation

In the fourth quarter between the No. 3 LSU Tigers and No. 25 Mississippi St. Bulldogs, the unbelievable happened: Jarrett Lee hit Rueben Randle for a 19-yard touchdown, the first such occurrence to happen in Starkville this evening. The strike delivered LSU a 16-6 lead, put Randle over the 100-yard mark and gave Lee an impressive 22-of-26, 218-yard stat line.

Next, Lee ended his streak of passes without an interception, which was the second-longest in school history, by finding a wide-open MSU defensive back down the middle. The Bulldogs took advantage by inserting backup Tyler Russell at quarterback, he of the more passing-friendly playing style. Three-and-out. That kind of thing kept happening.

This game was nowhere near as close as it looked. The Tigers gained more than twice times as many yards as the Bulldogs did, 366 to 176, with a significant portion of that latter figure coming on MSU's game-ending drive. LSU's defense, which was strong all night, really took over in the second half. The Tigers forced three straight three-and-outs before coaxing Russell into a severe overthrow that Morris Claiborne picked off to just about seal it up with five minutes left.

Drew Alleman applied his fourth field goal of the night to make it 19-6, Tigers. The sounds of Papa Roach began wafting through the air of Starkville. No, really, the stadium started playing Papa Roach.

Other than that one interception, Lee had a strong night, throwing for 218 yards on 22-of-28 passing. LSU running back Spencer Ware and wide receiver Rueben Randle each plied his respective trade for more than 100 yards.
