Boise State Vs. Toledo: Kellen Moore Has Great Night Against Rockets

It would be easy to overdo the praise of Kellen Moore after he quarterbacked Boise to a 40-15 win at Toledo -- as anyone who listened to ESPN's fawning broadcast of the game can tell you. But don't let that obscure the fact that Moore did have a very, very good night, even considering the fact that he was facing an obviously overwhelmed Toledo defense.

Moore was 32-of-42 for 455 yards, five touchdowns and one interception. That adds up to an eye-popping 201.71 passer rating. But even that stat might not give you an idea of the scope of Moore's performance, especially given the widespread misunderstanding of the passer rating.

So to give you an idea of just how good Moore was Friday night, his performance at Toledo would have placed him 40th in the nation in total passing yardage for the season on its own. No one ranked 88th or lower on the FBS list has even broken 300 yards passing on the season. Brandon Weeden, of the famously explosive Oklahoma State offense, has five touchdown passes in two games (and 92 attempts).

And it wasn't just that one of Moore's receivers was hot -- he completed passes to nine different teammates. Five of them had at least four catches on the night. (Though we should point out here that three of Tyler Shoemaker's four catches went for touchdowns.)

All of this, of course, with the caveat that it comes against Toledo in a sort of letdown game for the Rockets, who had taken Ohio State to the wall last weekend. But no matter whom he faces, if Moore keeps playing like he played Friday night, it's going to be hard to keep him from going to New York City in December.

Boise State Vs Toledo: Kellen Moore Leads Broncos To 40-15 Win

Quarterback Kellen Moore tied a career-high with five touchdowns as the No. 4-ranked Boise St. Broncos blew out the Toledo Rockets 40-15 on Friday night.

The Heisman Trophy winner was on target throughout the night, completing 32-of-43 pass attempts for 455 yards with one interception the only blemish on another stellar performance. Three of Moore's touchdown passes were to senior wide receiver Tyler Shoemaker, including a 17-yard strike midway through the fourth quarter that was the final nail in the Rockets' coffin.

Running back Doug Martin was the other star offensively for the Broncos, leading the team with 19 carries for 60 yards and adding five receptions for a team-high 122 receiving yards, including a 71-yard touchdown catch late in the first quarter.

Toledo's sophomore quarterback Terrance Owens completed 17-of-31 for 195 yards and an interception as the Rockets faced their second Top 25 opponent in less than a week. Toledo lost 27-22 to the Ohio State Buckeyes last week in Columbus.

Next week, the Broncos (2-0) open up their home schedule against the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes, while Toledo (1-2) goes on the road to play the Syracuse Orange.

No. 4 Boise State Vs Toledo: Kellen Moore Ties Career-High With Five Touchdown Passes

Boise St. Broncos quarterback Kellen Moore capped off a seven-play, 48-yard drive with an 18-yard touchdown strike to Tyler Shoemaker to extend the Broncos' lead to 33-9 over the Toledo Rockets with just under five minutes to play.

Moore has padded his Heisman Trophy resume to the tune of 32-of-43 for 455 yards and tying a career-high with five touchdowns against the over-matched Rockets defense. Three of Moore's touchdown passes have gone to Shoemaker, who has four total receptions for 52 yards on the night.

On the other side, Toledo's sophomore quarterback Terrance Owens is 17-of-30 for 195 yards and an interception as the Rockets play a second Top 25 opponent in less than a week. Toledo lost 27-22 to the Ohio State Buckeyes last week in Columbus.

Following Moore's fifth touchdown, Owens led the Rockets on a 73-yard touchdown drive that took just one minute and 25 seconds. The extra point was no good, the third missed point after attempt of the game between the two teams, putting the score at 33-15 with 4:33 to play.

Moore is done for the night.

Boise State Vs. Toledo Score Update: Kellen Moore Scores, Boise Comes Along For Ride

Not that the broadcasting crew for ESPN would let you miss it, but in case you hadn't noticed, this Kellen Moore guy is pretty good. Moore's latest drive: 6-of-7 for 60 yards (of the 89 Boise gained) and a touchdown, this one on a throw to Kyle Efaw.

At this point, Moore is pretty much beating Toledo on his own. He's 25-of-31 for 358 yards and four touchdowns. Toledo's entire team has only gained 267 yards of total offense. And Moore's running game isn't exactly helping him, picking up just 25 yards on 21 carries, a paltry 1.2 yards per carry -- a number that's dwindled downward as the game's gone on.

Or maybe it's not fair to say Moore is doing this singlehandedly. After all, he has completed passes to nine different receivers tonight.

Boise State Vs. Toledo Score Update: Broncos Lead 20-9 At Halftime

Who said WAC vs. MAC had to be boring? The waning moments of the first half of the game between Boise State and Toledo saw fans throwing yellow footballs onto the field, a Boise touchdown on a throw that appeared to go several stories into the night sky and an acrobatic sideline catch to set Toledo up for an at-the-gun field goal. And the game has not turned into a hopeless blowout (yet).

On the other hand, the box score looks pretty much like what you would expect from a 20-9 game. Boise has outgained Toledo 324-194. Kellen Moore has had a great night, going 19-of-23 for 298 yards and three touchdowns. The Rockets have largely shut down Doug Martin, at least on the ground, limiting him to 23 yards on 10 carries. Martin does have 96 receiving yards and a touchdown catch. Tyler Shoemaker has two scoring grabs for the Broncos, including one with 17 seconds left in the half on a pass that Moore lofted high into the air.

Toledo countered by going 34 yards in 14 seconds to set up a 34-yard field goal by Ryan Casano. That leaves the Rockets in an 11-point hole after the first half -- but you could have found a few experts earlier today who would have told you it could be worse.

Boise State Vs. Toledo Score: Doug Martin Touchdown Gives Broncos 13-6 Lead

It's not every day you see a 71-yard screen pass -- but that's what happened when Kellen Moore dumped the ball off to Doug Martin at Boise State's 29 and Martin ran all the way to the end zone to extend Boise's lead against Toledo.

Martin now has almost four times as many receiving yards (93) as he has rushing yards (23) -- and, of course, he has the one touchdown receiving. That single pass also essentially doubled Kellen Moore's passing yardage -- the quarterback is 6-of-9 for 140 yards and two scores. Keeping with the theme of the evening, Dan Goodale missed the extra point.

But Toledo might have some hope. While Boise has forced them off the field on the last two drives, the Rockets have failed to convert only two of third seven third-down attempts. If they're trying to catch up, they just need to avoid the big breakdowns that are ending drives.

Boise State Vs. Toledo Score Update: Teams Trade TD, But Broncos Lead 7-6

We're less than 10 minutes into the showdown between Boise State and Toledo in the Glass Bowl, and there are already 13 points to show for it. Toledo started the scoring off when Austin Danton hit Danny Noble for a 24-yard touchdown pass. But the Rockets messed up the point-after attempt -- something that will become significant as our story develops.

Boise came back quickly, with Kellen Moore going 4-of-4 for 57 yards on the ensuing touchdown drive. Boise converted a fourth down on the drive, and Moore threw a 26-yard touchdown to Tyler Shoemaker to put the Broncos on top. Boise made its point-after attempt, which is the difference for now in the game. Boise has now gotten possession of the ball again, so we'll see if they add on quickly.

Boise State Vs. Toledo: Can Kellen Moore Be Impeded?

Last week, the Toledo Rockets nearly "shot down" the Ohio St. Buckeyes, but "exploded" ... not closely enough. What are their chances of pulling off an even bigger, if less locally satisfying, upset against the No. 5 Boise State Broncos? Boise State blog One Bronco Nation Under God doesn't see it happening:

Kellen Moore and the Boise State offense will get their points, at least 28 of them and probably more. Can Toledo keep up? I think that will be the question on Friday night, and despite putting the fear of God into the Buckeyes, the Rockets might not come up with an answer they'll like. Boise State is no Ohio State, and I mean that in a good way.

Hustle Belt, the blog of MAC culture, is likewise dismissive of Toledo's chances at making headlines for a second week in a row:

I see Boise State, and their talent is amazing. Their coaching is amazing. Toledo is good, but not good enough. They might hang in there before Kellen Moore throws around that Rocket defense.

That defense is a common concern. OBNUG had a word with Rockets blog Let's Go Rockets (they like the Rockets), who likewise fret about Toledo's chances of stopping the Boise State attack, but adds a worrying note about discipline:

The weakness of this year's team so far has been the mental mistakes causing unforced errors. The Rockets were flagged 14 times for 102 yards against O$U. Several of those were illegal formation calls while punting. Gotta keep their heads in the game.

Kellen Moore carving up a team that doesn't know how to punt! Tune in for a pretty fun game!

Boise State Vs. Toledo: Cedric Febis Reinstated After Amsterdam Episode

Boise St. Broncos starting safety Cedric Febisone of the Amsterdam Three, has been cleared to play against the Toledo Rockets Friday night, the school announced. No word yet on co-starting wide receiver Geraldo Boldewijn and backup defensive tackle Ricky Tjong-A-Tjoe, who were also declared momentarily ineligible for Boise State's Week 1 game.

The Broncos evidently didn't need the three players all that badly against the Georgia Bulldogs, but they'll take all the help they can get against the ... what's the cliche ... PESKY Rockets.

Febis had 50 combined tackles in 2010 and 2009, playing in all but two games last year. He had four tackles in Boise State's 57-14 shattering of Toledo last year.
