Missouri, Not West Virginia, To SEC Upon Big 12 Collapse, According To Report

The West Virginia Mountaineers may indeed want to join the SEC, as was reported earlier, but according to a tweet by Sports Illustrated's Andy Staples, the Missouri Tigers are a more likely bet to actually get in. It's interesting to note that the only reports claiming WVU will make it in are coming out of Mountaineers markets, while no SEC outlets have reported the same from the other side of the alleged bargain.

While Mizzou would be a little bit out of the SEC's way geographically, it would boost the conference's academic profile while adding two large TV markets that aren't entirely opposed to college sports (cough, the silly idea of Syracuse football delivering the New York City market, cough). The Tigers offer solid football and decent ... other sports. And, hey, instant buddy rival for Texas A&M.

The Big Ten has been a frequently cited potential landing spot for Mizzou -- if either the SEC or the Big Ten can offer the Tigers a home, they'll happily take what they can get.

Adding 2 large media markets

that barely care about Mizzou football. If Mizzou was that much of a prize, why didn’t the Big Ten act earlier? Its because it isn’t a draw regardless of KS and STL. Bad bowl game attendance + bad TV ratings = no interest of Big Ten

Last year, Staples also oft commented how Nebraska has not shot of joining the BT because of the same argument, no big cities. He is still holding on it, and probably erronously so.

Bob, please acquaint yourself with some facts.

This link shows the interest ratings for college football and college basketball in Kansas City.

The reason the Big Ten hasn’t acted is because a) they think Missouri is not on par with them academically and b) they only care about landing Notre Dame. Which, seeing as Nebraska just got kicked out of the AAU, is something you might want to worry about. Enjoying that equal revenue sharing?

why Nebraska got into the Big Ten ahead of Mizzou

because the Big Ten is very calculated in their moves. Nebraska brought them a national following in football and the fact that Barry Alverez and people from two other Big Ten schools (can’t remember which ones, maybe Indiana & Penn State) heavily lobbied for Nebraska as they all had ties to Nebraska. I’m sure Missouri is on the Big Ten’s radar though. Personally, I would rather Missouri go to the SEC as a move to the Big Ten would kill some of our non-revenue producing sports such as baseball, softball, soccer, gymnastics, track & field, golf, tennis which are all up and coming
