Ryker Mathews Injury Robs BYU Of Talented True Freshman

BYU has lost freshman lineman Ryker Mathews for the year.

Days after a neck injury sidelined BYU Cougars tight end Devin Mahina for the season, true freshman offensive lineman Ryker Mathews announced on Facebook that he's also done for the year, assigning himself a redshirt.

Surgery next week on a torn plantar plate in my foot.. Out for 3-4 months.. Redshirt season here I come..

Mathews was on the two-deep for BYU, set to back up senior Matt Reynolds at left tackle. He's had some nicks and tears as of late, but nothing that looked to be this serious. The 6-foot-6 Utah native and three-star recruit has been highly anticipated by BYU fans, and did look to be in position to pick up some playing time this season.

BYU opens against on the road against Ole Miss on Saturday.
