West Virginia - Marshall Game Called Due To Lightning Storm, WVU Wins 34-13

After more than three hours of delays, Sunday's game between the West Virginia Mountaineers and Marshall Thundering Herd has been called. Despite 14:36 left in the fourth quarter, WVU has been named the winner by the score of 34-13.

Both teams came and went from the locker room several times as they awaited official word that didn't seem to come for a long time. Finally, minutes before the game was called, equipment people began moving their carts off the field and players began removing their pads and jerseys.

As for the game itself, QB Geno Smith was the star in West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen's debut, completing 26 of 35 passes for 249 yards and 2 touchdowns in the shortened game.

Marshall had some momentum in the third quarter after forcing a turnover on downs and cutting WVU's lead to 20-13 with a field goal. However, Tavon Austin took the ensuing kickoff 100 yards for the score, cementing the win for West Virginia. The weather delay began shortly after the score.

Officials Deny Report Of West Virginia Fan Being Struck By Lightning

While ESPN is reporting that a West Virginia fan was struck by lightning during Sunday's West Virginia Mountaineers-Marshall Thundering Herd football game, multiple local news outlets are denying that report.

West Virginia Today and Mike Casazza of the Charleston Daily Mail both cite sources that lead one to question the initial report. Casazza spoke with an "agitated EMT" on the scene who denied there was an injured fan.

The Monongalia County Emergency Management Agency even chimed in with an official announcement:

The reports of a WVU fan being struck by lightning in Morgantown is NOT confirmed. No one was treated by emergency personnel and the incident was never reported to WVU or emergency officials.

While the lightning strike did happen and was captured on TV, there doesn't appear to be any kind of injury to a fan or otherwise. If a fan was hurt, emergency personnel apparently haven't yet been notified. We'll stay tuned for more updates as they come in.

West Virginia, Marshall Delayed Again By Weather

While the first weather delay for West Virginia's game against Marshall might have felt interminable, it was just a three hour, three minute stop. The Mountaineers appear unaffected by the delay, scoring a touchdown on their first drive after the delay ended. But then another weather delay was called. This game may, in the end, become interminable if the game is not called.

The Mountaineers defense forced a three-and-out on the Thundering Herd's offense. Quarterback Geno Smith and Vernard Roberts led the Mountaineers down the field for a 54-yard touchdown drive, capped by Roberts' one-yard run.

The Mountaineers lead, 34-13, but this game is unlikely to be called due to dangerous playing conditions. It is a rivalry game that Marshall does not want to concede. But both sides will need to come to some sort of agreement as this delay does not bode well for future play this evening. Could they continue this on Monday?

Marshall-West Virginia Weather Delay: Lightning Stalls Dana Holgorsen Show

Just after Tavon Austin returned a kickoff 100 yards to make it 27-13 West Virginia over Marshall, officials ushered both teams into their locker rooms and warned the crowd at Mountaineer Field. Lightning has been spotted within the crucial six-mile radius of the stadium.

A 30-minute clock will count down once lightning dies down, and will re-start after every lightning strike during that interval. Once it strikes zero, players are allowed to warm back up for more football. With 20 minutes of game time left and only a two-score difference, it's hard to think the teams would agree to call the game, as Michigan and Western Michigan did Saturday.

Other games at the home stadiums of Notre Dame, Iowa and Tennessee were also affected by this same weather system, with Iowa and Tennessee facing manageable delays and Notre Dame pretty much sitting around doing nothing forever.

Until that kick return, Marshall looked to be seriously challenging the Eers. Herd quarterback Rakeem Cato put together another long scoring drive that ended in a disappointing field goal, but Marshall had drawn within a score.

Marshall Vs. West Virginia Score: Dana Holgorsen Debuts, Fireworks Glimpsed

The West Virginia Mountaineers lead the Marshall Thundering Herd 20-10 at the end of the first half. New coach Dana Holgorsen's offense is in first-game-of-the-season form, with three receivers producing catches of 20 yards or more despite some hangups. For his part, Geno Smith has completed 17 of 22 attempts for 187 yards, 76 of them to Stedman Bailey, and two touchdowns.

Good signs: well, the Eers are looking better than they did last year against their in-state opponents, though last year the Herd was all CLEAR EYES in their quest to score their first-ever victory against WVU. Smith eventually led his team to a late win, but the numbers support the perception at the time that Marshall had played well enough to win.

This time, the Mountaineers have almost doubled up Marshall in total yardage, 223 to 125, even though both teams are averaging right about five yards per play. The difference: WVU has run 15 more plays.

West Virginia's defense has forced five failed third-down conversions in six tries, limiting Marshall quarterback Rakeem Cato's otherwise tolerable (10-of-13, 81 yards) half, which included a 72-yard two-minute field goal drive to close the period.
