SMU Vs. Texas A&M Final Score: Cyrus Gray, Ryan Tannehill Lead Aggies To 46-14 Victory

The No. 8 Texas A&M Aggies cruised to a 46-14 victory over the SMU Mustangs on Sunday evening, though they experienced a slight bump early in the second quarter. But the Aggies held the Mustangs scoreless for the final 44 minutes of the game.

Texas A&M got off to a quick start by intercepting two Kyle Padron passes and turning each of them in a rushing touchdown on the ensuing drives. Mustangs head coach June Jones switched things up for the Aggies by taking Padron out and putting in J.J. McDermott, who led the team to a scoring drive. Zach Line put the ball in the end zone (after a 27-yard run) for the score, but it was McDermott who rifled a touchdown pass in the second quarter. That score brought the game to 20-14, the closest deficit the Mustangs had in the game.

Cyrus Gray led the Aggies running game with 132 yards on 21 carries. He scored his first touchdown after the second interception and followed that with a second one in the first quarter. His partner on the ground, Christine Michael, rushed for the first Aggies touchdown and added another one later in the second quarter.

The Aggies played a quieter game in the second half, scoring just 13 points. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill threw the second of his two touchdown passes in the second half, a 32-yard strike to Huston Prioleau.

Texas A&M stays at Kyle Field for next week's game against the Idaho Vandals.

SMU Vs. Texas A&M Score: Ryan Tannehill Sharp With Aggies In 43-14 Lead

Despite a brief surge in the first half when backup quarterback J.J. McDermott entered the game, the SMU Mustangs haven't been able to put anything together in the second half. Texas A&M increased its lead by 10 points, 43-14.

The Aggies drove down the field to start the third quarter and wound up on the SMU two-yard line. However, the Aggies were unable to punch the ball inside the end zone. Kicker Randy Bullock booted a 19-ayrd field goal. On their next drive, Ryan Tannehill threw his second touchdown pass, a 32-yard reception by Huston Prioleau. Tannehill is 21-of-26 for 246 yards.

The Mustangs went for it on fourth down on their first drive of the quarter, but J.J. McDermott came up with an incomplete pass on an eight-yard down.

SMU Vs. Texas A&M Score: Aggies In Control At Halftime, 33-14

Early in the second quarter, the SMU Mustangs had been down by just six points, 20-14, but two late touchdowns by the Aggies have them comfortably in control at halftime, 33-14. The Mustangs' early turnovers put them down in an early hole that they are still trying to dig out of.

Kyle Padron started at quarterback for SMU, but after throwing two interceptions on his first two drives, head coach June Jones had enough. The Aggies converted both of those interceptions into rushing touchdowns. J.J. McDermott stepped on the field for the Mustangs' third drive and led the team to a touchdown. Zach Line, though, took over the offense on the final two plays, rushing 27 yards to set up his one-yard touchdown play.

The Aggies came up with another touchdown late in the first quarter, Cyrus Gray's second of the game. However, the extra point was blocked, leading to an ultimately futile return by the Mustangs. McDermott brought the game to within six points, 20-14, with a 27-yard pass just seconds into the second quarter.

The Aggies tightened up after that and put two more touchdowns on the board. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill had a 28-ayrd touchdown pass to Ryan Swope while Christine Michael found his way into the end zone for his second rushing touchdown of the game. Randy Bullock missed the extra point on that last extra point attempt.

SMU Vs. Texas A&M Score: Mustangs Score After Quarterback Change, But Aggies Answer Back

The SMU Mustangs changed quarterbacks after two series. Kyle Padron threw interceptions on both, which led to June Jones to put J.J. McDermott under center. That certainly lit a spark under the Mustangs as they marched down the field for 60 yards and a touchdown. But a later Aggies touchdown has them up, 20-7.

Running back Zach Line picked up 45 yards on the drive, including a 27-yard rush that set up his one-yard touchdown run. The 27-yard play had originally been one yard longer and been called a touchdown. However, a review of the play had him down at the one-yard line.

SMU attempted an onside kick, but it failed, leaving the Aggies at SMU's 31-yard line. Cyrus Gray picked a three-yard touchdown run, but the extra point was blocked. The Mustangs almost ran it back, but they ultimately fell short.

SMU Vs. Texas A&M Score: Aggies Convert Turnovers, Lead Mustangs, 14-0

Southern Methodist head coach June Jones certainly doesn't approve of the start his Mustangs have had against the Texas A&M Aggies. The Aggies lead the Mustangs, 14-7, midway through the first quarter as a result of sloppy passing by quarterback Kyle Padron.

In Jones' wide-open, pass-happy offense, Padron has 41 career touchdown passes, but he has thrown two interceptions in just the first quarter of the first game of the season. Each time the Aggies have taken advantage of the turnovers and scored a touchdown.

Steven Campbell returned the first interception for 51 yards to the SMU six-yard line. Two plays later, Christine Michael plowed into the for a four-yard touchdown run. Trent Hunter grabbed the second interception and returned it for 30 yards. Running back Cyrus Gray picked up 29 yards on the ensuing drive while Ryan Tannehill had a 16-yard pass. Gray's last run, a five-yarder, resulted in the touchdown (though it did require a review that confirmed the call).
