Officials Deny Report Of West Virginia Fan Being Struck By Lightning

Stay connected with SB Nation

While ESPN is reporting that a West Virginia fan was struck by lightning during Sunday's West Virginia Mountaineers-Marshall Thundering Herd football game, multiple local news outlets are denying that report.

West Virginia Today and Mike Casazza of the Charleston Daily Mail both cite sources that lead one to question the initial report. Casazza spoke with an "agitated EMT" on the scene who denied there was an injured fan.

The Monongalia County Emergency Management Agency even chimed in with an official announcement:

The reports of a WVU fan being struck by lightning in Morgantown is NOT confirmed. No one was treated by emergency personnel and the incident was never reported to WVU or emergency officials.

While the lightning strike did happen and was captured on TV, there doesn't appear to be any kind of injury to a fan or otherwise. If a fan was hurt, emergency personnel apparently haven't yet been notified. We'll stay tuned for more updates as they come in.
