The Nevin Shapiro scandal looms large over the Miami Hurricanes as they try to take down new coach Randy Edsall's Maryland Terrapins in the season opener.
The Miami Hurricanes have already gone through a season's worth of emotion, and the season opener against the Maryland Terrapins hasn't even kicked off yet.
Miami, of course, is now the center of one the most potentially damning NCAA investigations in college football history. Eight players have been suspended for receiving impermissable benefits from former booster, now convict, Nevin Shapiro. Quarterback Jacory Harris is among the suspended, forcing the Hurricanes to rely on sophomore Stephen Morris behind center.
In part due to the outside issues surround Miami, Maryland enters the opener as favorites. Head coach Randy Edsall will be making his debut for the Terrapins, inheriting a team that went 9-4 last year.
There is plenty of reason for optimism surrounding College Park. For one, the Terps return last year's ACC freshman of the year in quarterback Danny O'Brien. Fans hope that another year of experience for O'Brien can help offset the huge personnel losses of wide receiver Torrey Smith and running back Da'Rel Scott to the NFL.
Game date, time: 8 pm ET, Monday, Sept.5
Location: Byrd Stadium, College Park, MD
TV channel: ESPN/ESPN 3
Spread: Maryland by 4
