Wisconsin, Mississippi State and Ohio State get rewarded for impressive showings this past weekend.
The Associated Press released their first Top 25 poll of the regular season on Monday. Though it wasn't as bloodthirsty as the Coaches poll, a number of teams dropped significantly. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Georgia Bulldogs both fell out of the rankings following their losses to the South Florida and Boise State, respectively. The Auburn tigers and the USC Trojans both won and still fell out of the Top 25 after struggling against what should have been overmatched opponents.
The Oregon Ducks took a big hit for having the audacity to play a title contender in Week 1, dropping 10 spots to No. 13 from the AP's preseason poll. The TCU Horned Frogs barely hung in the rankings, falling 11 spots to No. 25 following their thrilling loss to Baylor and Robert Griffin III.
The rest of the preseason Top 25 moved up to fill in the gaps, with a few teams making minor leaps. The Wisconsin Badgers hopped over the Oklahoma State Cowboys and Nebraska Cornhuskers to check in at No. 8 from their No. 11 spot in the preseason. The Mississippi State Bulldogs leapt four spots to No. 16, passing Michigan State on their way despite an easy win for the Spartans over Youngstown State of the FCS. The Ohio State Buckeyes checked in at No. 15 behind a better-than-expected performance from quarterback Joe Bauserman in a shutout win over Akron.
