The Arizona State Sun Devils will debut their all-black uniforms against No. 21 Missouri Tigers on Friday night.
The unranked Arizona State Sun Devils will debut their all-black uniform on Friday when they host the No. 21 Missouri Tigers at Sun Devil Stadium.
Arizona State started the season off right, cruising to a 48-14 win over UC-Davis last Thursday night. 6-foot-8 junior quarterback Brock Osweiler completed 19-of-26 pass attempts for 262 yards and two touchdown strikes to senior wide receiver Aaron Plufgrad and junior middle linebacker Vontaze Burfict had three quarterback sacks as the Sun Devils dismantled the Aggies.
The Sun Devils' no-huddle, quick-strike offense will be tested by a stingy Tigers defense that ranked 6th nationally in pointed allowed in 2010 and yield just 270 yard and six points to Miami (Ohio) last week. Mizzou was without starting cornerback Kip Edwards, and lost starters Jacquies Smith and Will Ebner during the game, but got solid efforts up the middle from Dominique Hamilton (eight tackles) and middle linebacker Andrew Wilson (10 tackles).
On the offensive side of the ball, first-time starting quarterback James Franklin (who replaces Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blaine Gabbert) passed for 129 yards and a touchdown and led the Tigers with 78 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Franklin will need more help from his supporting cast for the Tigers to get out of Tempe with a 2-0 record.
Game date, time: 10:30pm ET, Friday, September 9, 2011
Location: Sun Devil Stadium, Temple, Arizona
TV channel: ESPN
Spread: Arizona State is favored by 7.5 points
Series history: Tigers lead, 3-2. (Last meeting: Tigers won, 30-9 in Columbia, Missouri in 1990)
