After being suspended for the Insight Bowl, The University of Iowa reported Tuesday that RB Marcus Coker asked for and was given a release from his football scholarship.
The specific reasons for the release were not given.
Coker ran for 1,384 yards during his sophomore season, which was the fourth-best total in Iowa Hawkeyes history. It also ranked second in the Big Ten and had many thinking Coker was on his way to legendary status with the program. He also scored 15 touchdowns.
Coker was suspended from the Insight Bowl after violating the team's code of conduct policy.
He's also the latest in a long line of Iowa running backs who leave the program under dubious terms. Three running backs that were on the roster before him left via transfer or arrests.
Coker's departure comes on the heels of last week's announcement that freshman Mika'il McCall would transfer.
