We'd known Iowa Hawkeyes running back Marcus Coker was suspended from the team's Insight Bowl appearance last month. We'd also known he was granted a release from the program earlier this week. Now it appears to some that an Oct. 28 assault accusation may be related, though it's important to note Coker was never charged with a crime after the police investigation.
From a KCRG-TV report, which notes Coker had already registered for next semester's classes at Iowa before he and the program parted ways:
According to an Iowa City Police Department incident report from Oct. 28, 2011, a woman reported to police that she was the victim of an assault at Coker's residence, 618 Iowa Ave. The alleged assault took place sometime between 1:15-1:30 p.m. on Oct. 28.
For Iowa, it means yet another year in which the school loses its top running back and continues a long run of attrition in general. In 2011, Coker gained 1,541 yards from scrimmage.
