West Virginia's Andrew Buie Does A Barrel Roll

In football, you're not down if you roll over someone without having any part of your body in contact with the ground. Michael Dyer first reminded you of this in last year's BCS Title game when he rolled over an Oregon defender and strode on unwhistled to get Auburn in position for the winning field goal, but Andrew Buie of West Virginia thought the bowl season felt empty without another reminder of this rule.

Star-divide

If you tried to do that, you would probably just explode, cry, vomit, or all three at once.

I know the rule...

… and I understand it, and knew that Buie was not ‘down’ when it happened.

But something about that rule just doesn’t seem right. A player is out of control, no longer on his feet, and has been taken down by the opposing player. I’m not sure how it could be fixed, really, and I’m sure there are a million different “what ifs” in the event that the rule was to be modified, but something just doesn’t seem right about it.

/disclaimer: I’m not a Clemson fan, and though I like Chip Kelly, I’m not really an Oregon fan, either.

That's because the rule is clear as it is

If any part of the runner’s body other than his hands or feet touch the ground, he’s down.

What more do you need?
