Read More: West Virginia Mountaineers, Clemson Tigers
The West Virginia Mountaineers' season started in controversial fashion. Now former head coach Bill Stewart was forced to resign in the summer, following accusations that he asked newspaper reporters to dig up dirt on then offensive coordinator and current Head Coach Dana Holgorsen. West Virginia Athletic Director Oliver Luck was on the receiving end of some criticism for his handling of the situation, but after West Virginia's 70-33 Orange Bowl win over the Clemson Tigers, it appears that he ultimately made the correct decision.
West Virginia Mountaineers blog The Smoking Musket has gone so far as to name Oliver Luck their Orange Bowl MVP.
Oliver Luck is my Orange Bowl MVP! In one year he has made the difficult and often painful moves necessary to get WVU athletics moving toward unprecedented heights. His levelheaded guidance through "Stewmageddon" and the chaos of conference realignment has been rewarded. Last night's Orange Bowl "Mountaineer Massacre" (SI.com's headline) made this past turbulent year pay off.
Holgorsen was widely regarded as a fantastic offensive coach before his arrival in Morgantown, but very few people could have predicted that he would lead West Virginia to a BCS bowl victory after this summer's controversy. With his team's performance against Clemson, Luck has been vindicated in his decision to force Stewart to resign in June.
