Jeff Casteel Close To Becoming Arizona Defensive Coordinator, According To Report

Arizona Wildcats head coach Rich Rodriguez has hired a majority of his coaching staff for the offensive side of the football, but the search to find a defensive coordinator and defensive staff has taken longer than expected. That search might be over if the reports are true that West Virginia Mountaineers defensive coordinator Jeff Casteel will join RichRod's staff within the next 48 hours.

Casteel is expected to bring at least one Mountaineers assistant with him to Tucson: The Wildcats must hire two more defensive assistants, and special teams and tight ends coaches.

Casteel has been with WVU since 2001 and was Rodriguez's DC while there. When RichRod left to take the Michigan job, Casteel originally followed him but decided to stay at West Virginia shortly thereafter.

Casteel's defense have routinely ranked among the best nationally in scoring defense and turnover margin. He is rumored to be looking for a change of scenery from Dana Holgersen's offense-first mindset, which was on full display in the Orange Bowl.

For more updates on Rich Rod's Cats, keep a close eye on Wildcats blog Arizona Desert Swarm and SB Nation Arizona. Here's our 2011 College Football Coaching Carousel Tracker.

Pat Narduzzi Courted To Be Texas A&M Defensive Coordinator, According To Report

New Texas A&M Aggies coach Kevin Sumlin left the Houston Cougars for what will be one of the smallest salaries in the SEC, giving himself the chance to court top defensive coordinator talent. Sounds like everything is going to plan, with the man responsible for a top-five 2011 defense reportedly in College Station as we speak, according to Billy Liucci of TexAgs.com:

Billy Liucci@billyliucci Michigan St DC Pat Narduzzi in Aggieland today as Sumlin works to land his guy.

Narduzzi's Michigan St. Spartans defense, including top talents like Jerel Worthy and William Gholston, finished the regular season ranked No. 5 and was good enough to win a January bowl against the SEC East-champion Georgia Bulldogs, giving up only 21 points in an overtime'd Outback Bowl.

He has no clear connections to the state of Texas or the SEC. Previous stops included Cincinnati, Miami and Northern Illinois.

Bill O'Brien Interviewing For Penn State Coaching Job, Bill Belichick All But Confirms

New England Patriots offensive coordinator has been reported as the front-runner for the still-vacant Penn St. Nittany Lions head coaching job. He's reportedly becoming one of the very few candidates to earn an interview, which Pats coach Bill Belichick stopped short of confirming Thursday.

Still, Belichick noting that O'Brien wasn't at New England practice is the answer we need. The Patriots have a bye week, but offensive coordinators don't just skip practices during the NFL playoffs for no good reason.

O'Brien hasn't worked a college job since 2006, when he concluded a run of mostly position coaching jobs at various middlin' ACC schools. He has no head coaching experience, and only five years of coordinator experience.
