24-year-old Brian Johnson, former Utah quarterback, will replace Norm Chow as the Utes' offensive coordinator.
Feb 2, 2012 - Remember Utah Utes quarterback Brian Johnson, best known for tearing apart the Alabama Crimson Tide in the 2009 Sugar Bowl? He's been Kyle Whittingham's quarterbacks coach ever since, and Thursday was officially announced as Norm Chow's replacement. Chow left for the Hawai'i Warriors head coaching job.
Only 24 years old, he's one of the youngest coordinators in modern college football history, but has clearly earned the trust of his coach for most of the past eight years, as relayed in a release that makes diligent mention of other relatively inexperienced coordinators:
"After spending the past month conducting a national search for an offensive coordinator, it became very apparent that we had the best candidate for the job right here on our own staff," said Whittingham of his decision to promote Johnson, who turns 25 on Feb. 16. "Brian is a leader and a special coaching talent, just as he was a special player, and he is the right person to lead our offense," said Whittingham, who in 1995 became Utah's defensive coordinator after just one year as an assistant coach.
As a player, Johnson finished with 7,838 passing yards, starting for three years. He tried out for the Packers and the UFL before heading back to Utah.
