Norm Chow Hired As Hawai'i Football Head Coach

After spending decades working as an assistant coach, Utah offensive coordinator Norm Chow will take the reigns of an FBS program. On Wednesday, Hawai'i confirmed Chow has been hired as its next head coach, one day after initial reports of the forthcoming union began to surface.

Chow is coming home, as well, having been born in Honolulu. In a statement, the Utah defensive coordinator turned Hawai'i head coach said he was excited fro the opportunity, and hopes to make the fans proud.

"I am extremely honored to receive the privilege of leading the University of Hawai'i football program; it is very humbling," Chow said. "This is a program with great history, and I feel excited and energized about creating a program that will make all of the people of Hawai'i feel pride for the university and our state. I am looking forward to coming home, to family and friends, and I am going to do my best to contribute to the rich history of Hawai'i and its progress. I want to thank President Greenwood, the Board of Regents and Athletics Director Jim Donovan for giving me this opportunity, and I am looking forward to meeting the student body at the University of Hawai'i and getting them excited about Hawai'i Football."

Chow becomes the first Asian-American head coach at an FBS institution. He joins Hawai'i after 39 years as an assistant coach, including 27 years at BYU. Chow will remain with Utah in the interim, coaching the Utes in the upcoming Hyundai Bowl.

Norm Chow To Be Named Next Hawai'i Football Coach

Utah Utes offensive coordinator Norm Chow will be named the next head coach of the Hawai'i Warriors, the program confirmed in curious fashion by tweeting a link to the Star Advertiser's article on the subject. Still, a confirmation is a confirmation:

UH Warrior Football@HawaiiFootball NORM CHOW APPROVED AS NEXT UH FOOTBALL COACH - Hawaii News - Honolulu Star-Advertiserfb.me/1me0Z8XXw

As the Star Advertiser's Ferd Lewis reports, a press conference could be called for Thursday after Chow emerged ahead of two other candidates.

Born in Honolulu, Chow played his college ball for the Utes before coaching at BYU. From there, he's mostly remained on the west coast, other than stints with N.C. State and the Tennessee Titans. He's been his team's offensive coordinator at every stop since 1996, including the 2003 and 2004 AP national championship USC Trojans teams.

Norm Chow Believed To Be Next Hawai'i Football Coach

Utah Utes offensive coordinator Norm Chow has interviewed for the vacant Hawai'i Warriors head coaching job, and word from the islands suggests he's the front-runner. According to beat writer Stephen Tsai, a decision could come soon after a meeting among Warriors VIPs.

Utah blog Block U is getting pretty nervous about all this:

Chow, along with Oregon State defensive coordinator Mark Banker, Texas defensive backs coach Duane Akina and Baylor safeties coach Brian Norwood, will have all interviewed by weekends end.

He's the first candidate to actually have two interviews and the first, according to Hawaii sources, went very well.

We'll keep an eye on this, but it appears it's very possible Chow leaves Utah if he's offered the Warriors' job and that is increasingly becoming a possibility.

This was Chow's first year at Utah after three years with the UCLA Bruins and a run with the Tennessee Titans. He's best known as being Pete Carroll's USC Trojans offensive coordinator until 2004.

Hawai'i Coaching Candidates Include Dirk Koetter, Norm Chow And So Forth

Has your coach applied to be the next head coach of the Hawaii Warriors? Yes. According to the Star Advertiser's Stephen Tsai, 30 applicants have put their names in to replace Greg McMackin in Honolulu.

Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter, Utah Utes offensive coordinator Norm Chow, along with current Warriors associate head coach Rich Miano and director of player personnel George Lumpkin. Utes defensive coordinator Kalani Sitake, Navy Midshipmen OC Ivin Jasper, Baylor Bears associate coach Brian Norwood and Oregon St. Beavers defensive coordinator Mark Banker are also reportedly candidates, while Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo is reportedly not interested.

Whew!

Koetter's name is perhaps the most interesting, as he's overseeing a beleaguered NFL operation at the moment but does have quite a bit of college experience. He won two Big West Conference titles at Boise State before leading Arizona State to a couple of bowl wins, and spent more than a decade as a college offensive coordinator.

The Warriors went 6-7 in 2011, their second year without a bowl since June Jones left in 2008 and the third seven-loss season of the four-year McMackin era.
