Civil disobedience in the name of love. Call it how you'd like it, but that's how I've chosen to view the arrest of Florida St. Seminoles running back James Wilder Jr. Wednesday, Wilder was arrested for battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest with violence, but these are perhaps the two most tender-hearted felonies you'll ever encounter.
Police claimed Wilder shoved an officer, while the running back says he was only trying to show the officer a text message.
Either way, Wilder was trying to keep police from arresting a girl he's been with since middle school. Yes yes sure sure fine fine she was allegedly about to be taken in for missing a court date for a criminal mischief charge, and you shouldn't go and do things like that, but this will certainly go down as the most chivalrous arrest of the college football offseason.
Pushing a cop isn't a good thing, but it's far less dishonorable than pushing a woman, I'm sure we can all agree. And pushing a cop in order to defend a woman, no matter how misguidedly? Listen, we've all been in relationships that have caused us to do crazy things. And doing anything resembling the heaving of a law enforcement officer is a pretty crazy thing.
But taking a charge in order to keep your lady from facing the music alone? Isn't that what love is all about? Behold Wilder, the knight of the panhandle and the ACC's second greatest romantic, behind Dick Vitale.
