Could Dick Ebersol replace Chuck Neinas as the man in charge of the Big 12?
The Big 12 will soon need a new commissioner to usher it into its age of actually having 12 teams again, with interim commish Chuck Neinas soon stepping down to recommend Chuck Neinas be hired for jobs. And according to Austin American-Statesman columnist Kirk Bohls, a very recognizable name could be in the running. How's Dick Ebersol, the former NBC Sports chairman best known for Saturday Night Live and Olympics stuff, sound?
File this one away: Heard from a Big 12 source that Dick Ebersol, the former chairman of NBC Sports who worked with Olympics and NFL telecasts as well as "Saturday Night Live," could be a candidate to replace Chuck Neinas as Big 12 commissioner this summer.
Ebersol resigned from NBC Sports last May, replaced by Mark Lazarus. He doesn't have much major experience outside of television, and NBC didn't do much with college sports beyond Notre Dame football, but modern college commissionering (commissionery, actually) is as much about media as it is about athletics or the other a word. Academics or whatever.
